During the period of the republic of China, the female were undergoing the drastic change of society and transform of art concepts. With the opening of the trading ports, the people’s older thoughts were affected by the western capitalism of the equality of the sexes and God-given rights. Boudoir painters thirsted for freedom under the influence of new ideas, they were no longer confined to the marriage and family life. Out of their homes, they walked into society and the painting which dominated by the male to maintain the traditional Chinese painting with the male painters. On the one hand, the boudoir painters were affected by the traditional culture, one the other hand, they experienced the baptism of the new culture. Compared with the boudoir painters who in before the republic of China, their painting subjects, painting style and artistic thought presented some distinctive features.In this paper, based on the research of the boudoir painting during the period of the republic of China to explore the shadowed group of artists, lead people to understand of this group. The first part of this article was about the background of that era, the reasons of social about the boudoir painting during the period of the republic of China were analyzed in this part; the second part discussed the source of their skills and the background of educational through the analysis of the way of painting; the third part analyzed the characteristics of the boudoir painters through the regionality, public and versatile of the painters; the fourth part summarized the particularity of the object from the comparison of the boudoir painting in the republic of China and before the republic of China; on the basis of the research of four parts, the fifth part talked about the value and limitations of the boudoir painting deeply. The particularity of the boudoir painting and the "bright spots" were explored by the multi-angle analysis from overall to individual, the interpretation of female painters who buried in the historical memory was presented in this paper. In the time when cultures conflicted between Chinese and western, they didn’t overthrow everything blindly that is considered to be the old feudal ideas, but to protect the tradition of the Chinese art. The objective and comprehensive understanding of this group will improve their position and value in modern Chinese art history to provide the convenience of research in this field, also gave some enlightenment to women’s painting on today.
