You Guai Shi Tan is a classical Chinese fiction anthology of Ming Dynasty, and most of itsworks also can be found in some fiction anthologies before, such as Gu Jin Qing Tan Wan Xuan,Bai Jia Cui Bian, Guang Yan Yi Bian, and so on. Bishanwoqiao adapts and compiles works fromfiction anthologies before, making them present an unique aesthetic tendency. Almost all ofthese stories happen between human and non-human including monsters and ghosts. A highproportion of verses are inserted in every work and therefore a typical style combined by verseand fiction is formed. The unique characteristics of You Guai Shi Tan, namely the origin ofstories, the adaptation of original stories, the function of verses, and the aesthetic implication, isworthy of further explore.Except Introduction and Conclusion, this paper consists of four parts as follows:The first part makes a brief introduction of You Guai Shi Tan including its author, time whenit was finished, different versions, arrangement style and compilation standard.The second part analyses the origin of stories and the adaptation of original stories in YouGuai Shi Tan in detail. The adaptation of original stories mainly includes the following aspects:retitling, adding or modifying time, simplifying or adding content and refining details. Throughthis part, we discuss the rule and present condition of story adaptation.The fourth part analyses the overall aesthetic tendency of You Guai Shi Tan under theconsideration of aesthetic implication and compilation standard of You Guai Shi Tan. This partincludes four aspects: the aesthetic tendency of describing strange things, the entertainmentperspective of inventing unreal scene, the apparent fondness of describing sex scenes and theplaying of word games.
