D·H·Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers is recognized as a classic of modern literature. For a long period, its connection with Freudian theory and the heterosexual relationships are the focus of studying. In fact, the description of cultural and natural landscape and the ecological philosophy it contains are also worthy of being studied thoroughly. In Sons and Lovers the description of landscape, including cultural landscape such as mining area, farming villages, and natural landscape like mountains and rivers, sun and moon, not only serves as the background of complicated conflicts and the winding plot, but also conveys feelings and ideas and highlights the theme of the novel.Lawrence puts his ecological thoughts into the large quantity of descriptions of landscape. He loves nature with an innocent heart and observes nature with unique insight. He is acutely aware of the fact that mechanical civilization not only ruins the environment, but also destroys the once vigorous human nature, and healthy interpersonal relationship. And he shows the negative results of industrialization with his sophisticated writing skills. What’s more, in Sons and Lovers, description of the landscape can be regarded as an exploration of the relationship between human beings and land, between person and person, which successfully demonstrates his salvation for industrial society. This thesis analyzes the landscape descriptions in the novel from an comprehensive perspective of nature, society and psychology, to reveal which human society pattern and the man-and-nature relationship the author hopes for, and which one he frowns up. In this way, a further understanding of the author’s ideas of ecology philosophy and his advocating for return to nature as the salvation for humanity can be achieved.
