As a pair of classical art images in the western art history,“Mother andChild”, which is worth studying and exploring, is an eternal theme forartists to pursue. This paper tries to research and conclude theunderstanding of the western classical painting “Mother and Child” usingthe research methods of sociology. And it discusses the role and duty thiskind of painting performs in the western art history based on the culture,value and background of western societies. It also shows how the imagesand painting theme of “Mother and Child” changed with the influence ofaesthetic culture in different times, what this kind of theme paintingachieved and affected in painting skills such as composition of a picture,color, space and lines act, as well as why female artists are so wild about“Mother and Child” theme painting creation. Research’s in this paperstart from “Mother and Child” theme paintings of western works indifferent periods and are based on the life experiences of artists as wellas social environment at that time, aiming at interpreting and analyzingthe creation techniques in western art history.Western “Mother and Child” theme painting works play a very importantrole in western art history. With the development and requirements of humansociety, The effects “Mother and Child” theme paintings conveyed werevarious in different times, but they switched from stability to change,change to stability. In early age, the description of mother and child inlife scene for record, holy mother in religious scene, affection betweenmother and child revealed various subjects such as birth, cradling, growing,play, death and so on. But the touching love between mother and child staysthe same, which can be seen throughout the history, the changeable periodstyles, artists, painting techniques conveyed the unchanged affection,humanity and meaning of life. They as well record the social condition atthat time, affecting the aesthetic appreciation, pursuit and developmentof those periods and later.
