[ABSTRACT] Information media in the21st century, its role and influence in modern society has a pivotal position, and the documentary is the most influential media form, it has important social and economic functions and roles. In the vast amount of numerous television programs, documentaries still account for a large proportion. Whether traditional documentary, or emerging documentaries both have an effect on the development and changes of modern society, the effect of documentaries is the most intuitive. In this sense, the history of a documentary can be seen as a history of the development of modern society built by the moving image.Russian documentary has a long history, passing of Russian State through its difficult social change, it is not only showing precious and profound impact on the history of screen for the Russian people, but also for the foreigners. These picture, do not only depicts a wide range of social life and various periods of significant historical events, they also reflect different social living conditions of the Russian people in a different era, which has a very far-reaching practical significance and reference value.This paper examines "This kind of life should not be" documentary, which elaborates on the post-Soviet Russian documentary’s "purpose" and "effect". I hope for people who are interested in post-Soviet Russia’s documentary, to be able to obtain a deeper understanding of the Russian documentary in the new era of creative features and development changes through this paper. The first chapter of this thesis is on research status and research methods. The second chapter discusses the development of the Soviet-era documentary, its creation, and dissemination of the purpose and effect, characteristics of its creation, and the outstanding works of a well-known documentary filmmakers at that time. The third chapter discusses post-Soviet era the documentary creation of new development in Russia, as well as introduction of Russian modern famous documentary filmmakers and their works. The forth chapter describes the documentary "This kind of life should not be" the creative process and the content analysis of the writing style of this documentary, the guiding ideology and social significance, and its creative ways. Finally, a summary of the full text proposes that this documentary’s creation should ensure accountability for the society, apply its knowledge to guide practice, this documentary will attract more viewers, more far-reaching social influence, to achieve the best media effect.
