The teaching of college English reading has always been given much attention.However, the reading abilities and reading levels of students are not always high. One reason for this lies in the fact that many students pay attention only to the literal meaning of text, while ignoring factors such as the purpose, mode and values of the writing in the process of reading interactivity.With the new development of Systemic Functional Linguistics, the Appraisal Theory mainly studies how the attitudes of writers are presented in discourse. Therefore,this thesis combines Appraisal Theory with the teaching of college English reading in order to cultivate students’ critical reading ability and improve universal reading levels through guiding students to recognize and analyse appraisal resources consciously.In this thesis, eighty students from Harbin college whose majors are not English were selected as experimental subjects and were randomly divided into two classes(the experimental class and the control class). The two classes were treated during four months of experimental teaching. The experimental class used a teaching method directed by Appraisal Theory and the control class used the traditional teaching method based on grammar-translation. Combining the quantitative and qualitative research method and through comparative analysis, it has been found that the reading teaching mode based on Appraisal Theory can enable students to grasp writing topics correctly and raise their reading enthusiasm. Applying Appraisal Theory to the teaching of college English reading can improve students’ reading level and reading ability.
