Sergei Prokofiev is a famous soviet composer, musician and conductor in the first part of the 20 th century. Prokofiev created wide-ranging types of music, and his piano music was composed of many individual created compositions adapted from dancing drama and symphony. The adaption of soundtrack of dancing drama Cinderella Op.87 appealed to his wife. Therefore, he selected parts of soundtrack and composed three piano suites, which are Op.95, Op.97 and Op.102. Though the three suits of Cinderella are rarely mentioned and played, the complete set of work is figurative and enjoyable. In this work, suite Op.97 includes ten different styles of music pieces, and each of them displays figures and scenes in drama Cinderella. Prokofiev describes ten lively segments of fairy tale by using vivid and humorous musical language. This work strongly demonstrates Prokofiev’s story-telling ability by employing music and his capacity of endowing music with childishness and sense of image. This thesis analyzes how Prokofiev’s music composition shows childishness based on Cinderella Op.97. In addition, piano-play techniques and difficulties of this work are also studied according to personal performance experience. The body part consists of three parts: The first chapter: This part mainly introduces Prokofiev’s musical creation types and features, the three piano suites in Cinderella, and briefly analyzes the musical structure of suite Op.97 in Cinderella, which is the focus of this paper. The second chapter: The writer firstly analyzes the melodic and rhythmic features of Op.97 in Cinderella. Since Prokofiev often chooses fairy tales as topics in his musical works, the way in which the composer achieves childishness and playfulness by music could be explored through the concrete analysis of these suites. The third chapter: Based on the suites analysis in the second chapter and the writer’s deeper performing experience, three distinctive phrase types in these suites would be analyzed by musical processing in individual performance, so as to express the composer’s intention. Then, difficulties during the practice and performance would be elaborated specifically. The writer believes that Prokofiev has given full play to childish and interesting creation method in Cinderella, and his molding of musical images could be appreciated by music score analysis and performing experience. In this way, the vividness and dramaticism in Prokofiev’s works could be well displayed.
