Postclassical narratologists regard narrative works as products of cultural context. In the literary works analysis, postclassical narratologists apply the basic concepts of classical narratology as technical support, concentrate on readers’ positive role and how social and historical context act on works’ creation and acception. A Thousand Splendid Suns is Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini’s second work. It takes the instable Afghanistan as the background, tells the story of two Afghan women who are brave and strong in face of the miserable sufferings of life and desperately seeking for love and freedom. A Thousand Splendid Suns is a good text which can be taken as a sample of postclassical narratology. The special social historical context of the novel lay out the foundation of tension between text, readers and characters, affect the judgments of readers on the characters and events in the novel. The conflicts between characters or the inner part of novel, the writer and readers, the narrator and readers promote the development of the novel’s narrative progression. During the process of the narrative progression’s development, readers will make their interpretation judgments on narrative events, ethical judgments on characters’ or actions’ moral values, and aesthetic judgments on the quality of narrative art. Aiming to explore the beauty of Khaled Hossini’s writing, postclassical narrative research on A Thousand Splendid Suns not only can avoid the stripping skills away of content enrich the novel criticism perspective but also can deepen the meaning interpretation of the novel.
