Raymond Williams, a famous contemporary British Marxist literary critic and cultural theorist, is the representative and the founder of British cultural studies. He is honored as the most authoritative, determined and most original socialist thinker in the English-speaking world. "Modernism" was an important issue in Raymond Williams’ cultural studies. He regarded modernism as a sort of ideology and wrote cultural critique to it. Besides, Raymond Williams came up with corresponding theories and strategies after the criticism in order to surpass modernism. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to Raymond Williams’definition of modernism and the three positions of modernist ideology. The next three chapters analyze respectively the criticism of the three modernist positions confined by Raymond Williams and elaborate the theories and strategies proposed by Raymond Williams after the criticism.
