The thesis is based on the analytic research to the school of "bold and vigorous painting" in South Song Dynasty, and the representatives of Ma Yuan and Xia Gui are selected. Comparing the landscape paintings in South Song Dynasty with those in North Song Dynasty, we can find out that the theories, techniques and atmosphere are totally different. Therefore, the thesis tries to analyze the cultural elements in South Song Dynasty, and thus making it clear the basic artistic features and aesthetic tendency of landscape painting of South Song Dynasty. The school of "bold and vigorous painting" is based on the Confucius spirit, and represents the area characteristics of Hangzhou. Succinct lines here is used to combine the theories, techniques and atmosphere of Chinese landscape painting, so as to express the poetic landscape and work as a bridge between Literati Painting and Court Painting----that’s the school’s contribution. To put it specific, analysis is drawn from Ma and Xia’s paintings. They have inherited the merits in the paintings of Zhao Jie, and shown their high literal accomplishment. They are good at landscape painting, as well as the architecture, portrait and flowers, both vivid and poetic, showing a unique characteristic of South Song Dynasty.
