Chinese calligraphy has been receiving increasingly intense attention inrecent years. An overwhelming trend of emphasis on visual impact is quiteevident in current calligraphy works and the idea of writing for visual effectsor forms is widespread among calligraphers. Calligraphy is believed to be themost representative traditional art form in China. The ink marks, reflectingthe movement of the brush on the paper, are appreciated at different levels.Apparently, it is a form of visual art. In fact, it is a complex of numerousfactors, including the personality of the calligrapher and the cultural contextof the time. Scholars such as Zhu Guangqian from China and LathorLedderose from Germany have already elaborated over this issue with theargument that calligraphy is an art of “Muscular Movement” not only for thecalligraphers but also for the viewers. The concept of “Muscular Movement”in this paper is quoted from the book Letters on Beauty written by ZhuGuangqian. Ms Sun Xiaoyun has systematically explained the importance ofthe collaboration of the five fingers in the course of the practice of calligraphywith theory on traditional calligraphy writing styles. This paper tries toexplore the aesthetic factors of calligraphy in terms of movement in additionto visual effects from the perspective of “Human Engineering” and“Psychology”.
