The twentieth century was a very century which is full of turbulent’flow’. This century, an era of once and ever, has many a great difference compared with the past ones. Huge changes occurred in the methods for production and life style, which changes with the times under a unique period other than any previous historical backgrounds of people’s psychological modality. Just like the people of any age with a torrent of living cannot do whatever they want, the painters and the viewers are faced with a common anxiety given by the twentieth century, who also have their own anxiety distinguished from the others’. Anxiety has become the common emotional situation deep down in people’s hearts with the entire era altogether. Anxious age, different from the past, has been existing with all the anxious art works.Painting, as an art form, is one of the the most direct, the most abundant and the most various ways to create and transcend the old fashions. And at the meanwhile, the imaginative space given by the artists can also allow the viewers to imagine unlimited. This article aims to analyze the discourses of paintings created during the 20th century which are of great anxiety.
