Research And Creation Of Contemporary Boundary Painting

Boundary painting is a kind of painting which originates from the Eastern Jin Dynasty. The original version is the design drawing of architecture and since then, boundary painting developed to its summit in the Song Dynasty. However, boundary painting emphasized too much on techniques so that it had been ignored by men of literature and writing after the Yuan and the Ming Dynasty. Nowadays, in this modern world, the long-ignored boundary painting is supposed to revive by taking advantage of flourishing culture.The traditional boundary painting once had a brilliant page in the history of Chinese arts, such as Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, the drawing list of Yueyang Tower, the drawing of Penglai Pavilion and so on. Those works all have exquisite design, but with conventional painting techniques and inanimate painting style. In today’s arts circle which is filled with variously fresh, creative and characteristic elements, boundary painting should absorb what is best and get rid of the negative points.This thesis classifies the boundary paintings into two categories based on carding and analyzing the works of modern and contemporary world painters—insisting on the tradition, seeking the change of ink and matching well of Chinese and western paintings and the last one is blending the elements of western paintings. This thesis will explore the similarities and differences of the works of modern contemporary boundary paintings and traditional paintings as well as the improvements respectively, thus concluding the direction and trend of development in contemporary boundary paintings. Then, the author combines work according to his own creative experience with the subjects, line, shape, composition and color to explain his innovative point and basis, which aims to analyze these specific aspects respectively and express his understandings as well as the practice of the modern and contemporary boundary paintings.In the flourishing cultural tide, the boundary painting is an indispensable part. But for their recovery and long-term development, more painters are needed to explore, discover and innovate industriously, trying to make this ancient painting back to life with thriving vitality. This is not only an enrich conduct of the modern paintings but also the inheritance and development of the traditional Chinese culture.
