Metalanguage awareness is one of the important factors to improve the students’ bilingual learning proficiency. Word awareness is an important aspect of bilingual learners’ metalanguage awareness. Bilingualism learner’s word awareness influenced by development from monolingual to bilingual, but also will be affected by different family background, educational idea, the cultural differences between nations, the factors of social environment, economic conditions, and so on. Finding the characteristics of bilingual students’ word awareness and reasonable application for it in the bilingual teaching process helps the realization of the expecting goal. This study is under the guidance of the threshold hypothesis theory of Cummins and the analysis and control theory of Bialystok, using the word awareness test questionnaire that compile the scale of the Mat-2 part by Italian psychological linguists Pinto,M.A and Trusso F. To investigate the bouyei bilingual students’ word awareness, we divided it into three parts include vocabulary ambiguity, formation of word, and grammatical category distinction. Then using SPSS19.0 statistical software for digital processing of the students’ word awareness level and comparative analysis.The sample school of this study is Guizhou Wangmo county, Xintun center elementary school and Nabao elementary school, 135 bouyei bilingual students from grade two and four, according to students’ bilingual proficiency divided into monolinguals, unbalance bilinguals, balance bilinguals, thus six groups in total. From the results of analysis and comparison, we find that:(1)balance bilinguals and monolinguals shows great advantage on the word awareness; balance bilinguals showed certain advantages on word awareness than unbalance bilinguals; there are appearence significant difference word awareness among monolinguals and unbalance bilinguals, unbalanced bilinguals’ word awareness is slightly higher than monolingual.(2) With the growing of the students’ bilingual proficiency, students will generally develope higher word awareness.(3) As a part of the bouyei bilingual children’s word awareness, grammatical category distinction is the most uncertainly factor.
