Descriptive frequency adverbs, which belong to adverb, have been researched by scholars of domestic and abroad. However, these related research mainly study the classification and the range of adverbs, there is little professional thesis that has taken descriptive frequency adverbs as studying target. Furthermore, the studies on the selection between the verbs and descriptive frequency adverbs are not sufficient to catering the development of modern grammar of Chinese. In the tangible process of teaching Chinese as a second language, adverbs as the function words could always be the teaching knots for teachers and difficulties for students. That is because its function of use and the semantic use is complex, which puzzle the learner’s a lot. To be more specific, the selection between descriptive frequency adverbs and verbs infers the selection between function words and notional words. It is so urgent to deepen the research on the limits of selection that we can make reference for the Chinese language studying and put forward the theory for TCSL.The definition and the range of descriptive frequency adverb that concluded by former scholars enriches this thesis and fundamentally give the basic theories of this investigation. Combined with the language data bank developed by Beijing University, the target sentences are collected and analyzed. The analysis goes into six parts. In the first chapter, we mainly introduce the literature review on the topic and the study methods and meaning of the thesis. Secondly, the sixteen target words are separated into four groups for analyzing from chapter two to chapter five. They are investigated from three aspects: the attached function word followed the verb in the selection, the quantifier and temporal words, the percentage of each kind of verb in the selection of the target adverb. The semantic features of descriptive frequency adverb are vital to how active the verbs can match the adverb properly, and the semantic features of the adverbs influent the selection of the verbs, too. It is this limit of selection theories that make sense of the complex circumstances in Chinese language which the former grammar cannot explain. The conclusion we have reached provides the learners with the data of the selection percentage, and somehow broad the way to the modern semantic grammar research in Chinese.
