Yangb lus qim is an ancient and spectacular epic about the origins, wars, and migration of the Miao people in west Guizhou Province. It didn’t draw the extensive attention from the world until the year of 2009. It is defined as one of the most important discoveries that year. Yangb lus qim is a self-narrated history of Miao so that it becomes the important material for the study of Miao’s history, culture, and spirit. Due to the history, culture and geography, Yangb lus qim describes the cultural origin and war immigration with tragic color. Consequently, the discussion of its tragic origin, feature, and meaning is significant to the study of the Miao’s history and culture in west Guzihou. The thesis targets on the tragic characters of this epic,analyzing the spirit of the tragic characters and summarizing the cultural meaning through the description, types, features, and reason of the tragic characters to deduce the causes of society, history, culture and geography of the character formation so as to accurately understand the culture and spirit of the Miao in west Guizhou.The first chapter is about the overview of Yangb lus qim in the two aspects of its primary contents and prevalence. It briefly introduces the culture and plot of the epic,discusses the current situation and predicament it faces, and analyzes the reason for its difficulty to be inherited.The second chapter targets on the tragic scene and bitterness of the epic as well as the tragedy of epic cultural connotation means the angles,to analyze the embodiment of Yangb lus qim’s tragic characteristics, namely, the tragic color of epic cultural space.The third chapter makes the causes for the tragedy as the standard and divides the tragic characters in Yangb lus qim into the tragic characters fighting within nature, the tragic characters fighting within family, and the tragic characters fighting within life.The representative of the first is Yangb lus qim’s ancestors who created the world; the second, the brothers, father and son with blood ties who killed or miss killed each other; the third, the fellows and familiy of Yangb lus qim who suffered war migration and death.The fourth chapter explores the feature of consciousness of the tragic characters in Yangb lus qim from three aspects: life consciousness, incarnation consciousness,and force consciousness. They manifest the aestheticism and spiritual culture implication of Miao people.The fifth chapter analyzes the causation of the tragic characters by illustrating the origin through the natural environment, the history of migration and the cultural implication of the nation to catch the tragic factors in Yangb lus qim as a whole.
