"The Scholars" is a unique work in the history of China’s classic novels. From the selection of novel subjects to the presentation of writing techniques,it is refreshing. It departs from the subject matter range of emperors, geniuses and beauties often selected in classical novels, and it reflects and criticizes real life directly from the perspective of literati and value orientation, and exposes the deformity and decay of society.Based on this, this article expands from the following three aspects: the tragic implication of the characters in "The Scholars",the tragedy roots of the characters in "The Scholars",and the comic performance art of "The Scholars".From the tragic implication of the character image, the victims of the decaying imperial examination system appearing in the author’s pen,the ugly nights and the ruined ideals who are locked in fame and fortune are all tragedy images wearing heavy shackles and dancing, showing on them The tragic implication is a reflection of the true status quo of the society in the early Qing Dynasty, opening up a true historical picture for readers.Looking at the tragedy roots of the characters, the root causes of these tragedies include society, destiny, and character.Under the separate or combined effects of these three roots, the tragedy of the characters in the novel is caused. In addition, from the standpoint of the comic performance art of "The Scholars",Wu Jingzi ingeniously adopted a unique comic performance art in shaping these tragic images, making the novel full of fun and readability in plot setting, characterization and language use. This artistic form, which uses tragedy to express tragedy meaning, shows the tragic core of the novel deeper, making tragedy more tragic.
