Negation has been a concern in the study of logic and linguistics. Influenced by Japanese culture and society, the negation has a high frequency of use, in which the auxiliary verb nai is the basic form of expression. On the other hand, in recent years, represented by Yosio Nitta, Takasi Masuoka, the study of modality in Japanese has been more completed and systematic. There is two forms in modality, of which "nai" belong to the forms with tag. This paper puts a particular emphasis on the focus from the perspective of the internal and external negative type, discussed in two different types of negative focus on how positioning. This paper mainly consists of three chapters:In Chapter one, The similarities and differences as well as the correspondence between negation and affirmation is compared in order to master its own characteristics. The negative connect word, constituted by the negative connector word and a root is better to say it ruled out the possibility which the root expressed. The auxiliary verb nai is a more fundamental form of expression. In addition, from the perspective of subjectivity and objectivity, the study on negation has certain meeting point with the modality. In Chapter two, the negative sentence is divided into internal -type negation and external -type negation from the perspective of modality, which was focused on analyzing how to properly grasp the negative focus in two different sentences. In this chapter, internal -type negation takes the example of the particle ha, On the other hand, no de ha nai is taken as the example of the external -type negation. In Chapter three, the meaning and function of nai is analyzed. The negative auxiliary verb nai in internal -type negation means the situation does not exist and a new understanding of the situation which does not exist, while in the external-type of negation it is the negation of the state of affairs which contained in the sentence or it is just negate the listener’s hypothesis. In short, as the basic forms of expression in modern Japanese, the importance of the negative auxiliary verb nai speaks for itself. Dividing the sentence into internal -type negation and external-type of negation, and analyzing the focus of negation, can deepen the understanding of the Japanese negation expression, helping to improve the efficiency of communication.
