As a kind of attractive language phenomenon, verbal humor plays an important role in our everyday lives. Short sketch is well liked by millions of Chinese, and it contains so many humorous utterances. The analyzing cases of humor are from short sketches in the Spring Festival Gala Evening of CCTV or other local satellite television stations over the past ten years. Using the Comparative Research Method and the Case Study Method, the paper attempts to reveal the cognitive process of understanding verbal humor, making a comparison of the impact of verbal humor between the two pragmatic theories. By means of analyzing the Spring Festival gala sketches, we know that the combination of these two theories is a more effective way to explain humorous words. It can also help people understand and appreciate the connotation of humor from a deeper level.
