Black and white illustration is a kind of art different from other categories of painting, and it exists in a unique way. The thesis hereinafter will firstly explore the vigorous, concise and imposing illustrations in foreign literature by Zhang Shouyi to present the features and the artistic pursuit of the illustrator; and then with the analysis of his manifestationspoints, lines and surfaces and his freehand brush work, it will be addressed that how the illustrator characterizes his figures in a concise way, and how the expressiveness of his illustrations is blended with the representativeness of his characters and the intension of the literature. All this shall finally reveal the style, exploration and significance of the illustrations by Zhang Shouyi, and the possible development and trend of illustration in a new era shall be developed alongside.
