This essay study mainly about imagery as a way of sense and art language, trying to get a deep and open-minded understanding of the imagery, at the same time, supporting my art work with contemporary theory. In my opinion, the imagery as a kind of art language is the relation between the individual person and the change and transformation of substance, and the intuition, thoughts and expression of the relation, which is quite different from the western way of conception expression, for while the imagery emphasizes the combination of self and substance at the first stage of conception growth, being an art language to express the sense of being. How to combine the self and substance? In which aspect can combine the self and substance? What’s the function and position of imagery as a language is this combination? This essay is going to discuss these questions thoroughly.Imagery is the core of the essay, with the water being the clue. Sometimes both take their proper position, and sometimes combine together. The first chapter of essay talk about the deep relation between the imagery expression and the Chinese pre-Qin dynasty art, from view of the origin of culture, race character and the traditional art language. Besides, talk about the expression, character and meaning of the original imagery. The second chapter tries to find out certain belongings of cultural identity and possibility of imagery expression in the contemporary culture and trend. Compare and analyses the western art work about the orient, and the traditional Chinese art work with imagery, to catch the commons and linkage between the west and east in sense and expression, allowing my understanding of imagery to go into the philosophy aspect and expecting to make the cultural barrier in my mind disappears temporarily, which will help me to shuttle between west and orient freely during the process of thinking and contemporary art creation.
