Roger Deakins has achieved Academy Award for Best Cinematographytotally Thirteen times and that makes him became a Uncrowned king. His experience of being a cinematographer for now could be divided into three huge different stages,which were years before 1990, the whole nineties, and years from 2000 to now.Because of the factors of technological development and those environment where Deakins worked, the cinema style of Roger Deakins has been through a great change, but we can still see some Characteristics which were never change so that people could recognize very quickly. His cinematography style mainly reflects in four factors: In the application of lights, Deakins is good at combining many kinds of light source with scene and environment to create some realistic and formalistic effects,which were praised and imitated frequently by other cinematographers; Deakins was very cautious to the use of image color, he would even take some achromatic measures to get the effect that unified and dramatic; Deakins did many practices of documentary and photography when he was young to train a habit of watching still things, so that his cinema movement feels very peaceful to us; on the aspect of frame,center symmetry is the most popular measure of his panorama and mid-shot, it even reflected in all the sizes of film. Roger Deakins is an exploiter of American cinematography in this century, his realistic and smooth cinematography style represents the general style of American films in this century,and also could be the microcosm of this period.
