Based on the study of the handed-down ancient classics and literary works, this thesis makes a comprehensive analysis of the character of Yu Rang and conducts a horizontal and longitudinal comparison about this character, aiming to launch a research on the connotations,extensions and evolution of Yu Rang. In the beginning, the thesis summarizes the condition of Spring and Autumn Period to explain the historical background which breeds the character of Yu Rang. Then, it narrates his lifetime and the story of Yu Rang repaying his master to demonstrate his loyalty. After that, this paper makes an analysis and a comparison of the character of Yu Rang in various historical records and other works. At last, it briefly describes the change and current situation of the relative historical sites of Yu Rang. Then based on the analysis above, it reaches a conclusion at the reason why Yu Rang is still remembered today.The introduction part is to sort out and analyze the handed-down ancient classics and literary works of Yu Rang and to summarize the current research achievement, at the same time makes a simple analysis of the shortcomings and defect in these achievements.The first part makes an investigation on the deeds of Yu Rang. It expounds the historical background of Yu Rang, and illustrates the gratitude between Zhi Bo and Yu Rang and also narrates the details of the assassination of Yu Rang to Zhao Xiangzi, which paves a way for the whole thesis. It is the vogue of people in the pre-Qin period to value more on reputation than life,so if you make a general survey of the five thousand years old Chinese history, you can find that almost all of the famous assassins are born in this changeable and treacherous period.Among all the ancient assassins, Yu Rang is the purest one devoted to repay the greatest gratitude he receives, with no other political intentions.In the chronological order, the second part makes an analysis of the character of Yu Rang in the handed-down ancient classics and other works from pre-Qin period to Qing period. This part is established in the recordations of the handed-down ancient classics, combining with the historical background and circumstances of lives, it studies the connotation and denotation of Yu Rang’ s character, expounds the spirit of the times which the writers endow the characters of Yu Rang because of the historical background and summarizes the distinguishing features of Yu Rang in each work to enrich the research on evolution of Yu RangThe third part analyzes the differences of Yu Rang’ s character in the various works horizontally and vertically. Based on comparison in writing characteristics and intentions, it discusses the character of Yu Rang in different author’s perspective within the same era and thecharacter of Yu Rang in the similar works in different ages, then expounds the causes of them.Through these researches, this part tries to study the evolution of character of Yu Rang.In the fourth part, it sorts out the historical sites related to Yu Rang. To make a further analysis of the character of Yu Rang, it studies the portrait stones of Yu Rang in the Han Dynasty and investigates the construction and current condition of both of the bridge named Yu Rang and the temple called Yu Rang.
