Based on the modern Chinese corpus, this paper does an entirely meticulous comparison to the causative words shi and rang. According to the characteristics of syntactic structure and the causative factors, it is used the analysis method of three planes of traditional linguistics to comprise shi and rang in each participating component of the sentence. By showing the syntactic form and semantic characteristics of the participating components selected by shi and rang, it indicates that shi and rang have something in different.This paper analysis the same but different reasons of shi and rang from diachronic perspective. The two have the same functional mechanism and intersection extended meaning so that the development vein of shi and rang is basically similar. It is also the reason that they can replace each other in modern Chinese.The origin time of each of ontology and the semantic characteristics of etymology, make them lose unified pace in the abstract degree of causative, and make them have different influences and restrictions on the using range.Research shows that when shi and rang is interchangeable, it has the requesting to choose the syntactic elements of S with semantic feature of words, which is [+ event], as the cause or condition. It is more limited by the noun of person-denoting and thing-denoting when is choosing O. It must be the result of participants of VP. To the choice of VP is a must of semantic with [+ change] in any syntactic form. In their own position, match modifiers tend to choose these words that can enrich expressive effect, such as modal, negative and degree verbs.For the overall Causative Construction it can be converted freedom into complex sentences through relating word, and the form of complex clauses reflect the complete scene.The non-replaceable situation shi and rang embodied in that shi can combine with de and zhi. It is suited for written language. While rang can combined with other modal verbs, such as mei and bie. It is commonly used in spoken language. Rang sentences have the rigid demand to the words of human factors so that the causative of rang have a variety of different semantics and usage in actual.
