Textbooks offer necessary materials for activities in both teaching and learning. An excellent textbook plays an important role in the development of lesson. With the rapid development of teaching Chinese as a second language, the number of Chinese language learners increases every year, which also place higher expectation on textbooks. Some Chinese textbook writers try to cooperate with foreign scholars in composing Chinese language textbooks."Encounters-Chinese language and culture" is developed by China International Publishing Group and Yale University Press. It was designed for English-speaking students in middle schools and universities. The main writers are Cynthia Y. Ning and John S. Montanaro, who employ a funcutional, task-based approach in the Encounters program. In this article, the writer refered some researches about textbook composing to analyze the Encounters program. Then the author designed a lesson about Encounter 1 of Unit9 and did a teaching practice to students of Chinese3b in some American public high school.The paper is consisited of five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the research aim, methods and research summary.Chapter 2 analyze the composing of the program, and how the program prepares different language points, such as vocabulary, Chinese characters to its learners.Chapter 3 analyzes the composing of different exercises in "Encounters", "Read and write" and "Unit recap".Chapter 4 illustrates the teaching design of "Encounter 1" in Unit9, includes the teaching objectives, process and ananlysis. And reviews the successful part as well as problems based on students’feedback and class observation.Chpter 5 provides some suggestions from the aspect of a new teacher.
