As a literary genre, novel has a long history with different forms in different historical periods. In the Tang Dynasty, the occurrence of the legend marked the beginning of the ancient novels’ maturity and consciously writing. The legend of the Tang dynasty is actually a transition part in the ancient novel history, flexible to reflect the real life while offering enormous material for the development of the novel and drama in the later periods. It is because of the importance of the legendary of the Tang dynasty, multiple generations of recording, preservation and rewritten situation have been done in the process of the communication. Therefore, this thesis intends to focus on the way of communication of legend in the Qing Dynasty, aiming to excavating its characteristics, questions and influences.This thesis consists of three parts including Introduction, the main body and Epilogue.The Introduction mainly introduces the topic-selecting basis and significance. It analysis the present focus of the academic study of the Tang legend through the research of its spreading and thus introduces this paper’s research significance and methods, innovative points, key factors and the difficulties encountered in the process of creation.The body of the essay consists of three chapters:Chapter1: the spread of legend of the Tang in Qing dynasty depends mainly on the spread of bibliographic description and preservation. This chapter mainly discussed the bibliographies and private bibliographies of the Tang dynasty in order to find out the characteristics of those descriptions and the causes of those characteristics distinctive from the former generations.Chapter 2: since the time interval between the Tang dynasty and the Qing dynasty is large,the preservation of many legends of the Tang could not be intact. Therefore the titles, writers’ names as well as the contents of the legends have changed in the Qing dynasty. This chapter mainly combines series and anthology of tang dynasty with an overall study of series first and the study of “Tang Dai Cong Shu” and “Tang Ren Shuo Hui” later as examples.Chapter 3: This chapter mainly studies "Liao Zhai Zhi Yi" as a example to analyse of the influence of the legend of Tang dynasty to classical Chinese novels in the Qing dynasty. Many works, including its quoting of the theme, plot, and the use of artistic techniques in “Liao Zhai Zhi Yi" are the rewrite of the Tang legend. This chapter analyses the similarities between the Tang legend and "Liao Zhai Zhi Yi" and the innovative points of "Liao Zhai Zhi Yi".Epilogue is the summary of the thesis. Through the previous three chapters, we can find that the Tang legendary is widely spread in the Qing dynasty with problems occurred in the transmission process. However the importance of the Tang legend in the history of Chineseancient novels is undoubted.
