Review Of Discourse Discourse Based On Evaluation Theory

Taking the Appraisal system as the analytical framework, this thesis analyzes evaluation resources in book reviews discourse to master its distribution regularity,consequently to help the critics in their creation. Appraisal Theory is a theory which is achieved by Martin. As one of the most influential arts form, the book review has drawn more and more attention and analysis to its evaluation resources’ distribution. Based on analysis to corpus of 160 book reviews, this thesis collects all the evaluation resources in discourse, classifies them according to evaluation system and figures out each sub system’s proportion in the whole discourse by means of data quantitative and qualitative analysis. The distribution of the subsystems in the four discourses has certain rules but unbalanced. First of all, the attitude system and its subsystems have a bigger proportion, because the book review is what the reviewers comment on the books. What’s more, the engagement system and the graduation system have a smaller proportion than the attitude system, but they play an important role on strengthening the objectivity and languages of the reviews. This shows that the critics focus on the readers’ recognition of their views. In this paper, we use the new method to have a deep research on the book reviews, hoping to provide new framework and ideas.
