Patti Smith, is a rock singer and poet and the founder of the punk rock from America, who was born on December 30, 1946. She was the personification of female rocker in 1970 s, and the person who introduced poetry and the spirit of institutional critique into the rock music. ‘Female rock’ was defined as the music that created and performed by women and expresses their emotion. The rock music has been dominated by male masculinity and show little recognition on women creators, women is also usually appears as a passive object image in rock music. Patti Smith challenges this situation by androgynous image and special style of language, and she redefined the role of women in rock music.According to the historical and cultural context and the music creation and performance style of Patti Smith’s, this paper made an integration with the experience of female rock musicians and the concept of gender. The music career of Patti Smith was divided into three periods according to the three waves of feminist thoughts: Radical feminized attempt, Female trait diverse display and Eliminate gender performer. Through the observation of various heterogeneous women experience form different periods of Patti Smith’s music compositions. Borrowed the view from research of postmodern feminism was used to investigate the way of Patti Smith how to establish the right to speak in rock music which is dominated by man. The music career of Patti Smith shows us a lot of thought about music and gender. Women can play rock music as well as man, and show themselves by various ways.
