Showing the inclusive feature of popular music, punk rock plays a pivotal role in rock history with its distinctive charms. The general public can seldom understand punk rock correctly, especially in its relationship with popular music. Although punk rock labels itself as anti-mainstream music, it still keeps an ambiguous relationship with mainstream culture: it either stands up to or is incorporated by mainstream culture. As a result, it is of great significance to understand the relationship between punk rock and mainstream music. This thesis takes Green Day as an example and uses such methods as textual analysis, cultural context analysis, comparative analysis and case analysis. By means of defining punk rock, discussing the cause and development of its style, this thesis, and analyzing the stereo style, structure and performance, this thesis summarizes the stylistic changes of Green Day. After that, based on the social background, this thesis also discusses the deeper meaning of its style and the influence of punk noise aesthetics and punk rock on popular music and society. The author collected detailed resources and deeply analyzed the works of Green Day to draw a conclusion of the significance of punk rock.As a special manifestation of subculture, punk rock is a utopian musical revolution in its real sense. In spite of its rough music technology, it always demonstrates thorough criticism, grasps the pulse of the era, and expresses the most-needed voice by the general public in the art form. Although extreme values and dross are not rare, the artistic expression and DIY spirit in punk rock exert a profound influence on the development of popular music.
