It is the only way which must be passed by those majoring in Piano to study piano works of Impressionism and Expressionism in the early 20 th century. To study the ideological implication and playing skills of piano works of these two styles, this paper, from the aspects of Sociology, Physiology, Aesthetics, etc., uncovered the special spirit of that time and musicians’ personal experience and ideological characteristics. Plus, illustrated by the in-depth analysis of the works of Schoenberg and Debussy, the two important composers of Impressionism and Expressionism, respectively, this paper tried to find out more scientific playing techniques and music processing methods. Studying Impressionism and Expressionism at the same time is beneficial not only to comparison, but also to finding out the similarities of piano art development and the uniformity of these two kinds lurking beneath their mutually-contradictory styles. Impressionism and Expressionism are the two cornerstones of Modernism, and knowing the piano works of both kinds is most helpful to further study more contemporary piano works.
