Under the manufacturing mode of Mass Customization, how to make rapid response to market and meet the special requirements of the customers efficiently were taken into account of the design stage, therefore, the technology of product configuration and variant design have been widely studied and achieved great result. However, existing research does not involve the impact of different manufacturing modes, and also lack of the integrated study of product configuration and variant design. Consider of the important of these two factors, an integrated model for product configuration and variant design which can support various manufacturing modes is proposed in this dissertation. The main contents are as follows:In the 1st chapter, the research background of this dissertation was described. The research status of the product configuration and the variant design was discussed, and the main limitation of recent research is that this kind of design was not integrated with the manufacturing mode. The main content and the structure of this dissertation were given at last.In the 2nd chapter, an integrated model of product configuration and variant design which supports various manufacturing modes was proposed. The impact of different manufacturing modes on product configuration and variant design was analyzed. And the contact of product configuration and variant design was discussed. The integrated model was described with SML, main geometric model and decision table. In different manufacturing modes, forms of modules were analyzed. The four steps in modeling were given at last.In the 3rd chapter, the process of product configuration and variant design based on the integrated model was described. Different configuration processes were used for various manufacturing modes, and a method for configuration solving based on depth-first search was proposed. The processes of non-geometric variant design and geometric variant design based on SML and the main geometric model were discussed. In the 4th chapter, wheel loader was introduced as an example to verify the feasibility of the model mentioned. The modules of wheel loader could be divided into ATO, MTO and ETO manufacturing modes. The processes of modeling, configuration and variant design of cab, bucket and work device modules were elaborated.Chapter 5 summarized the achievements and innovations of this dissertation and gave a prospect for the future research in this field.
