The integration of WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) and 3G(the 3rd Generation) networks has recently evolved into a very hot topic. However, most WLAN-3G interworking studies have been dedicated to WLAN adopting 802.11i standard, rather than WAPI(WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure), as a complementary to 3G.This paper researches on the integration of 3G and WLANs which adopte both 802.11i and WAPI security standards. Furthermore, the paper proposes a security access authentication system to support interworking network access authentication. The paper firstly analyzes the architecture and AKA(authentication and key agreement) procedures of 3GPP WLAN-3G interworking network and points out their advantages and disadvantages. Then, an improved architecture and a novel authentication protocol EAP-WAPI are proposed in order to achieve authentication for the users using WAPI.or 802.11i WLAN access network, which promotes the harmonization of standards at home and abroad. Finally, the paper describes the implemention of Security Access Authentication System of WLAN-3G interworking network in detail, especially focous on the development of WLAN-3G interworking AAA server(I-AS). The testing results show that the system can fully meet the requirement of authentication for WLAN-3G interworking network.
