With the development of communication technology, switches are used in Ethernet more and more widely, both layer switch and complex multi-layer switch are playing the more and more important role, but with the increasing of switch and other network device, the traditional network managemet need to configure a IP address for every network device, which make the IP address resource become more shortage and make the management of network become more and more complex. Therefore, the existing network environment requires the management of the switch must also be continuous improved, the emergence of the Switch Group Management ( sgm ) technology can solve all the above problems.SGM is combined by a group of switches, it provides an automated method to collecte device topology, and a centralized, unified management channel. Just use one IP address and one management interface to communicate whith other network device, and provides a ability to manage and access each member of the SGMThis paper based on"Ethernet switch technical specification of cluster management",give a detail introduction of the structure of all packets ,the process of the protocol and the detailed implementation,he first chapter introduces the existing techniques of switch network management; the second chapter presents the concept of SGM, presents its network structure and its advantages; third chapter describes the relevant elements of the SGM, such as: the establishment of SGM, the management process and the packet formats; the fourth chapter has detailed to introduce the design of the SGM software, in addition to introdce the extension function of SGM such as trap transmission, log transmission ; chapter five introduces the environmental of testing and the test results are given; sixth chapter summarizes the full text.
