As a kind of newly-developed wireless communication network, Wireless Mesh Network is more and more broadly used because of its advantages at the aspects of flexibility and expansibility. At the same time, many mesh network technologies are incomplete as mesh network just start its way of development; more specifically, these technologies involve performance, routing and security. Problems on these facets must be solved firstly to get wireless mesh network technologies progress. This thesis is mainly focus on wireless mesh network routing technique. So far, there are no specific routing standards for mesh networks, so Ad-hoc routing protocols are frequently employed in mesh networks. In this thesis, we analyze the routing protocols used in mesh networks, interpret and extend the function modules of simulation nodes in OPNET, so as to test the performance of these routing protocols. To start with, we introduce some routing protocols employed in mesh networks; AODV and RM-AODV, which is the on-demand part of the default routing protocol in the IEEE802.11s standard are specially analyzed. Then, we analyze the detailed simulation mechanism and principles of the original wireless node model of network simulation tool OPNET. Based on the foregoing job, we design the scheme of how to add AODV and RM-AODV routing modules to the original simulation node. After implementing the new routing module, we build up a simulation scenario to compare the protocols' performance. This essay provides the simulation principles and mechanism of OPNET wireless node in detail to give convenience of subsequent researchers to extend the node's simulation function. Plus, we present a simulation extension scheme of WMN routing protocols in the environment of OPNET, to provide a foundation for further research work.
