In recent years, the AVS (Audio-Video coding Standard) standard which China owns the intellectual property of has been widely used in great variety of areas. It has changed the situation that the video coding area was monopolized by foreign organizations with its advanced technologies and low using cost. It also has accelerated the progress of our nation's video industry. Compared with that most of the AVS coding system which are implemented with hardware, the AVS coding software is underdeveloped. The efficiency of official version of AVS coding software is still quite low, so it's necessary to carry out the optimization work.In this paper, a series of work had been carried out on the AVS video decoder:Firstly, we analyzed the performance of the decoder with VTune Performance Analyzer to find out the hotspot. Then we focused on the hotspots to give out the optimizations including the simplification of interpolation point choosing in macro-block decoding, the pre-judgment of reference block border, the intermediate variable using method in inverse transformation, memory allocation and some other optimizations. We improved the decoding speed by the ratio of 143%-532% for different sizes of videos without any decoded picture quality loss. The decoding speed of QCIF and CIF videos exceeded the real-time standard (25FPS). At last we succeeded to transplant the decoder to the DSP platform (TMS320DM6446)...
