With the embedded computer systems become more widely used in military field, more and more military command and control systems and communications equipments want to have a powerful graphics display capabilities and friendly graphical user interface to meet the needs of human-computer interaction. At present, China's military core chips used in embedded display system are heavily dependent on foreign imports. From the long-term development, we should increase researches on embedded graphics system, and develop core technologies with independent IP and related products to break the technology monopolization of the Western world, gradually realize localization of the military graphical display equipment.The topic detailed analyzes the embedded graphics display technology, VGA graphics display principle and the current graphics card and embedded graphics chip technology. In accordance with the display mode and register function that defined by IBM VGA standards, we presents a design proposal of a VGA graphics controller which has independent intellectual property rights, and then implement and verify.The main work of this paper is:1. The paper detailed analyzes the development process of embedded systems and research status at home and abroad, and then illustrates the background and significance of the subject.2. Based on the detailed researches of the embedded graphics systems technology, VGA display technology, and other popular graphics chip technology, we presents the general framework of the graphics controller used in embedded system which is named as LingRui VGA graphics controller.3. According to the framework of the graphics controller, we put forward hierarchical design method, and respectively complete the design of each function modules. Then Verilog language is used to implement the various modules. 4. EDA tools are then used to do the fully functional simulation. And validate the system on the self-developed FPGA board.Verification results show that the VGA graphics controller successfully achieved the text mode and graphics mode display, the maximum resolution is up to 1280×1024, the highest display is 32-bit color, and it also attains compatibility with the DOS, VxWorks, Linux, Windows and other general-purpose operating system that achieves the desired design goals.
