Digital video technology is the trend of the video technology development now. Some new video coding standards are developed in recent years in which H. 264/AVC which is developed by ITU/VCEG and ISO/MPEG is the newest one. Many new coding technologies are involved in H. 264. They make H. 264 improve its coding efficiency greatly without loss in video quality. Good adaptability in network means that H. 264 has a good future in the application of network stream media and wireless video. The complexity of H. 264 results in its slow decoding speed which is a roadblock in the process of the application and spread. This paper optimizes the decoder based on studying H.264 coding algorithm.This paper firstly introduces basic concepts,principles and development situation in this field.The second part of this paper parses the structure and the flow of H. 264 encoder and decoder.Then analyses and studies key modules and algorithms such as structure of NAL and VCL, inter prediction,intra prediction, inter transform and quantisation,entropy coding and so on.The first step in the last part is the complexity analysis of decoder reference model. The analysis result decides which parts of the model should be optimized. The second step the model are optimized in code level.Then optimization is applied to memory allocation on NAL, motion compensation, entropy coding, deblocking filtering and inverse inter transform in various ways. Data produced by the optimization process is analyzed and decoding speed after optimization is much faster in comparison with the speed before optimization. Finally, MMX technology application of H.264 decoding optimization is discussed.
