IP Multimedia Subsystem(IMS) is specified by 3rd Generation Partnership Project based on Release 5 for supporting the IP multimedia services. It provided the next generation platform of multimedia services by the aid of IP protocol, surpports the fix and mobile access mode and realizes convergence of them. IMS blaze a way in both the evolvement of all IP network for current telecomunication system and realization of mobile IP services. IMS core based on SIP protocol architecture and use SIP message to control the session, to create, manage and terminate all kinds of multimedia services. All kinds of terminals can establish a P-to-P IP communication and get the services they required. IMS also provide the key functions of multimedia services, such as register, account, session control, carrier control, media negotiation and safety, etc. It is the base of converge for multi-services, can support voice, data and multimedia applications.IMS indicates the develop trend of current telecommunication network and points the direction of the NGN. In our country, Ministry of Information Industry and other academe is defining the criterion and standard actively. At the same time, every network vender are also researching and deploying the IMS network rapidly. So the realization and application of IMS will become true soon. Then research and development of IMS in this thesis has great meaning for the understanding and generalization of IMS network.Firstly this thesis described the trend of development of current tele communication network and NGN, and introduced the concept of IMS and its background. Then discusses the meaning of generation and development of IMS, from network operators' and users' view...
