Withthedevelopmentofmobileequipment,newfunctionmodules shouldbeaddedto the SOC chips to satisfy the need of customers. However, it takes a long time toaccomplish the design of the new function modules. So it's a good idea to addfunction-extension interface to the chip. SDIO interface is such a kind of function-extension interface.Firstly, the specification of SDIO controller is introduced, which includes thecommand and data format, important commands and the register construction of SDIOdevice. Then hardware design of SDIO host controller is proposed, which could bepartitioned into four parts: command controller, data controller, interrupt controller,clock and power controller, the detail information is described in this article. Softwarearchitecture,including commandanddatatransfer, plug-and-playandFAT16filesystem,is also introduced. Ahigh-level simulationmodel based on ISS simulator-ARMulatoris used to evaluate SDIO host controller performance and FIFO parameter. To guranteethe correctness of SDIO host controller, Specman Elite verification tool and FPGAverificationsystemareusedtoverifyit.FPGA verification demonstrates that function of SDIO host controller iscompatiable with SDIO spec 1.01. The speed of read-transmission between hostcontroller and SD memory card is 8116.98Kbyte/s and that of write-transmission is7461.06Kbyte/s.
