Smart antenna is a key technique in 3rd generation mobile communication. In this thesis, the basic theories of smart antenna and the advantages of SCDMA technology are introduced firstly. Then the fundamental ideas of the numerical methods such as MOM and FEM are discussed, and the even and odd mode method for computing the characteristics of the coupled micro-strip line is put forth. By these, a novel high-gain omni-directional printed antenna is designed, which has the merits of low weight, high precision, etc. Thus a uniform circular antenna array composed of 8 such elements is constructed, the measured and theoretical results are compared, and the impact of mutual coupling on the radiation pattern of such array is presented. Next, the basic theories in smart antenna calibration are summarized, and a calibration network made up of power dividers and directional couplers are designed, which meets the design requirements. The experimental results demonstrate that the antenna array and calibration network designed in this thesis are of good performance and high value for the development of other smart antenna systems.
