The design of the horizontally polarized omni-directional (high gain) antenna has been researched in this paper to meet the engineering application requirement in the modern wireless communication.Firstly, the theories about the omni-directional antenna design are introduced in this paper. After the main characteristic parameters involved in the antenna design are presented, two kinds of omni-directional antennas based on different design principles are separately analyzed. Furthermore the omni-directional radiation principle of the dipole square array is studied and the effect of several key parameters on the radiation pattern shape is discussed.Following are some analyses about several typical horizontally polarized omni-directional antennas, such as the waveguide slot antenna, the cylindrical conformal microstrip antenna, the printed dipole square loop antenna, the coax slot antenna and the Alford loop antenna. Then in the specified frequency band these kinds of antennas are designed and simulated as well as compared with each other.According to the engineering requirement a horizontally polarized omni-directional array is made up of microstrip antennas. Eight microstrip antenna elements form a line array to obtain the high gain and four line arrays form a new omni-directional square array. The whole array is simulated by the electromagnetic software IE3D. After the array is made its performance is tested. The measure results agree well with the simulation results and the designed array with good performances meets the specified requirements. Moreover experiments about the effect of the key parameters on the radiation pattern shape are also carried out.The research in this paper is significant to design and application of horizontally polarized omni-directional antennas.
