With the rapid expanding of the Internet,it is difficult for the traditional network to adapt the requirement of the network capability. In this environment, the network survivability is becoming more and more important. The traditional network survivability methods cannot solve the dynamic network status. The different network survivability methods should be used in view of the requirement and characteristic of the different services.GMPLS(Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching)not only brings the network intelligence, but also makes the traditional network simpler and achieves the intelligence and the survivability of the networks.The main contributions of this paper are as follows:1. The characteristic, the expansibility at four aspects, and the framework of the GMPLS are summarized. The basic method to resolve the network survivability is described.2. The key parts of GMPLS are described, including of the traffic engineering and QoS. The traffic engineering mechanism of the GMPLS is summarized. The concept of the QoS and its implementation are explained in detail.3. The hierarchy of the protection and recovery mechanism in GMPLS network are given and the fault management is described, which provides the foundation to our methods.4. A new differentiated dynamic network survivability scheme based on GMPLS is proposed. As compared with the traditional network survivability schemes, our scheme improves the efficiency of the network resources and decreases the mean time to failure. Our method solves the contradiction between the network survivability and the efficiency of the network resources.
