A TDMA protocol used for the cluster-based distributed MANET (Mobile Ad hoc Network) is designed, and a compensation algorithm to improve the robustness is proposed in this paper. The cluster-based distributed MANET consists of several clusters, in which three kinds of nodes are included: cluster heads, ordinary nodes and gateway nodes, and the nodes in it are self-organized. According to these characteristics, a TDMA protocol is proposed for this MANET. The whole operation process includes three parts: power on, synchronization and working. Since it applies to a distributed wireless network without GPS timing signals, synchronization, which includes a gross synchronization and an accurate synchronization, is an emphasis in this paper, in order to get accurate timing information from its cluster head. Besides, the robustness is another emphasis. The influence of nodes failure on the network is discussed in terms of the node type mentioned above. A compensation algorithm is put forward in order to compensate the network. Finally, both the proposed protocol and the algorithm are simulated, and their results are analyzed. The results show that the MAC protocol can better fulfill the needs of the network, and the compensation algorithm provides some degree of improvment to the robustness.
