With the development of NGN and the coming of commercial 3G, Softswitch becomes the hotspot in the telecommunication field. This paper is about the application of Softswitch as well as its testing in WCDMA network.This paper firstly gives a simple introduction of the background. It introduces the development of the Softswitch and 3G now and also the importance of the paper.In the second part of this paper, Softswitch technology is introduced, including its generation, principle and its advantages. After this, this paper introduces the application of Softswitch in WCDMA. In this section, R4 network is the focus, including the network architecture, functions of the network element and the interfaces between the elements.In the third part of the paper, a real equipment of Softswitch is afforded. The function, roles in the network and related signaling of the MSC-S and the MGW are described in detail.In the fourth part of the paper, the testing of the WCDMA R4 Softswitch network is introduced. This part tells what the project aims to and what the simulator DCT2000 is. Then, a detailed testing configuration is presented including network configuration, testbed configuration, interface configuration and test cases. In the following, a basic call procedure according to the 3GPP specification is described. At the end of this part, a test result is given.Finally, some problems and suggestions are proposed.
