Vehicle instrument is a window through which the driver communicates with the car to exchange information, as well as which is one part of main sophisticated vehicle technologies. At present, the development of the domestic auto industry in the instrument is more slowly than it of the whole vehicle. Comparing to abroad, there is a prodigious gap between the foreign car industry and the domestic auto industry. For example domestic products are of low technological levels, monotonous shape, poor reliability and durability, low-level figures. It is necessary for our country to innovate new technology so as to etermine the developement trend of vehicle instrument and research a new generation products.This paper researches vehicle virtual instrument system, deeply discusses the idea and the method of system design and brings forward the approach of design the vehicle virtual instrument on the platform of Embedded.First, the paper not only researches current development states of vehicle instrument technology in the world, but also compares vehicle computer with traditional vehicle instrument, then points out the main work the paper should achieve. The work include the construction of vehicle virtual instrument system, sensor data acquisition, data bus transmission, minimum embedded system software designment, WinCE minimum system construction and virtual instrument display parts. Second, the paper researches the main basal techniques and theories which are related with the vehicle instrument system. They are embedded technique, virtual instrument technique, multi-sensor data fusion algorithm and software measurement algorithm, fieldbus technique and so on. We can directly and easily apply these research conclusions when we design the system.Then, the paper introduces the specific designment of virtual instrument system. At first, the paper points out system designment idea and the function which the system is to realize. Secondly the paper designed the overall scheme. Thirdly the paper designes the hardware of the system, which includes intelligent sensor adapter, the vehicle computer modules, touch screen LCD display module and module design. Immediately it presents the system software design, which includes the driver program of the system equipment and the program of the main application. Finally, the paper researches the system's feasibility by experiment studies. One of them is adopting simulation circuits to replace real auto sensors, then displays the sensor acquisition data on PC screen. The other is constructing the minimum WinCE system by Platform Builder 5.0, then displaying the vehicle virtual instrument on LCD.
