As the Core Part of the CNC machine tools, CNC technologies are developed by many countries in the world. It is trend to being open for the CNC systems. On this situatioins, our research is evolved. As the aim of the research, the Open CNC system includes two parts: one is the open motion controller, the other is the upper CNC software system based on PC/Linux operation system. Both of them have maked up of the open CNC system..In this paper, some key motion controller problems are firstly analysed and developed, such as hardware designing, control algorithm, I/O interface ,software programming of DSP, and so on. Secondly, a new kind of open CNC system is illustrated based on the motion controllers and the improvement of the motion controller is researched in detail. Some functional modules are added, such as some peripheral equipment, ADC, DAC, PCI, RS232, and so on. All the parts above make the kernel of GSK CNC system.Also In this paper, the software models and architecture of GSK CNC systems based on Linux operating system are studied. Some key programming problems are analysed,such as data exchange,real-time control task arrangement, software module interface ,and so on. These make the cores of NC software. Following the designing of the upper application software, the GSK CNC prototype machine tool is realized. Some machining experiments show that the function and specifications of the prototype are satisfed. All the research work will be valueable for further CNC reserch and development work.
