The traditional communication facility of personal computers plus wire network can no more satisfy people's need for getting information any time, any place. The components of conventional communication terminals like cell phones included base band, radio frequency, protocol, and application, which are all manufacturer dependent. The function of any terminal is preset and can not be modified. With the increase of data traffic in wireless network and the rising desire for individualized communications, the traditional terminals like the cell phone will be integrated with those like PDA and HPC in functionality and be gradually replaced by future mobile computation terminals, which promise an open architecture with high performance.Aiming at large scale data gathering and at the requirement for individualism, this paper explores and implements an embedded mobile computation platform with an open architecture. The paper analyzes embedded computation models in multiple aspects, such as the wireless network, embedded hardware design, the structure of open embedded software, etc. Grounded on the intensive study, this paper put forwards an open mobile computation model, which adopts ARM as its hardware platform, Linux as its embedded operating system, GPRS as the wireless communication solution. The model has the following advantages: transparency to the upper layer applications, fast deployment, modularized design that enables customization, open architecture that supports system upgrade, practicability and flexibility.Practice has proved that the model has good feasibility. The system based on the model runs well and achieve desired effect.
