| Objective The larynx is an important organ which has many physiological functions such as breath, the sound production, the protection, swallow and so on. It is very useful in clinical diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the larynx to recognize the complicated distribution and extensity of the anatomical structures in the larynx through thin sectional anatomy and three-dimensional visualization. To build a PC-based visualization model for the larynx of the first Chinese digitized visible human could provide three dimensional anatomic data for anatomy teaching, virtual laryngeal operation and surgical operation of larynx diseases by 3-D reconstruction. Methods In this study, Cross-sectional images of fresh tissues from the first Chinese visible human dataset were gathered by the third military medical university. Meanwhile, the images of the larynx were observed meticulously. After being registered accurately with Photoshop CS software, the sectional images of the dataset of anatomical structures in larynx were reconstructed with 3D DOCTOR 3.5 software by volume rendering and surface rendering on personal computer. With the support of visualization software Amira 4.0, the dataset of the larynx was visualized and displayed in three-dimensional space on personal computer. At the same time, the anatomic structures in larynx could be observed clearly at any angle. Results 1 .After being matched accurately, the thin sectional images of the visible human dataset were compared with the CT and MRI of the larynx. The anatomic structures of the larynx images were observed and measured. The research indicated that they have the good corresponding relations, and the thin sectional images of the visible human dataset could provide the complete and clear fault anatomy basis for CT and MRI.2.The research reconstructed the three dimensional structures of larynx entirely. All reconstructed structures could be displayed by multiple structural and color modes, individually or jointly, and could be rotated around any spatial axis.3.The creation of visible larynx model can be used for the digital anatomy teaching, and can provide three dimensional anatomic data for virtual laryngeal operation and the laryngeal surgical planning. Conclusions The frozen thin cross-sectional acquisition technique and high pixel digital image taken by this study can guarantee high definiting continuous slice imaging. The features of larynx imaging set are thin slice, clear structure, high resolution and high quality superior to previous dataset, which might be fit for being taken as reference of CT, MRI. The visible human dataset can provide complete and accurate data. The quality of the computerized 3D-reconstructed images was distinct and perfect. The digitized model of the larynx offer unique insights into the laryngeal anatomy and could be used for resident education, rehearsal of an unfamiliar surgery and for developing a new surgical approach. |
