Geographic Information System (GIS) is a special spatial information system which can make the visual effects and geographic analysis functions integrated with database operations (for example, query and statistical analysis). This capability is so different from other information systems that it can be applied to events explaining, result forecasting and strategy planning With the development of computer technology and network technology, the applications of GIS have been widely developed. The appearance of component makes object-oriented technology go to a mature practical stage and there comes a big change in the form of software industry. GIS, a widely applied and professional software, is usually installed by components on other software for redevelopment. The information management system of water supply, based on GIS, manages information input, maintenance, use and analysis of all kinds of information. In this paper, an implementation method for the information management system of tap water based on the MapX component and Visual C++ is advanced. The system can let the users master the information from water supply network quickly and accurately, thus it's very important for governor of water resources to make decision.First in this paper an introduction on the present situation and developing prospect of GIS technology is made. Then, the feasibility of this water management system is analyzed and simultaneously the topics covered by the development of related technologies and methods is briefly described. In this paper three parts are chiefly expounded. They are system function design, system realization and system prospect. The characteristics of functional requirements, hardware and software implementation of the process as well as the problem are discussed in detail in this paper. The system has five sub systems - user management subsystem, pipe-network subsystem, basic data management subsystem, geographic information subsystem and real-time pressure monitoring subsystem. The functions of view control, print, browse, edit, view, pressure statistics, show and measure have been implemented. The final expansion of the system is to explore the specific methods of the system functional and structural expansion. This system has been designed and completed independently, and some basic functions have been realized. It is a meaningful try for GIS in the water supply pipe network management and has a nice developing prospect.
