A method of software designing of A GPS terminal based on a embedded system is discussed in this paper. With its increasingly extensive military and civil use and development in measuring and controlling on roads, automobiles navigating, traffic controlling, oil prospecting,operation on the sea ,first aid and so on , The Global Position System exercises a further influence on our daily life and production.On the other hand, benefiting from the continuously improvement of hardware and software development and embedded OS technology ,mobile computer technique is app-lied abroad in handheld device.Mobile computer system represented by PDA and int-elligent mobile phone being incresingly popularization makes it good market outlook of handheld device with GPS navigation function.In view of the requirement for the embedded GPS application of faster computing and smaller storage space needed,according to the characteristic of interaction between man and embeded system, a S3C2410 processor based on the ARM framework is used as the underlying hardware platform,Linux with open Source is introduced as the OS platform,MiniGUI is used as the GUI supporting system and SQLite is used as the database management system in this thesis to study and build a GPS applicaiton with a digital map in a embedded system.Basic information in the form of map is supplied in this application,on the basis of which a positioning function is performed simultaneously to offer the users some attached information of current position. The system is practicable and simple in application ,without relying on any other servers.It is of great value when used in the fields like mobile devices and navigation in cars.This paper deals with the application of Linux in embedded system and the transplantation of MiniGUI and SQLite to the Arm-Linux system; analyses the definition of geographic coordinate system and the basic principle of coordinate transformation;performs the transforamtion between geographic coordinates,two-dimensional Cartesian coordinates and screen coordinates;analyses the format of MapInfo digital map files;designs the SQlite database for storing the map imformation and attached messages;discusses collecting position messages from the GPS deveice by communicating with the GPS deveice in the embedded system through a RS-232 serial port, explains the displaying of digital map and position information with MiniGUI,the system supports touch screen ,and performs the function like reduction and enlargement printing ,map dragging ,distance measuring and searching the map for an posible address.This paper provides the experimental result of the target system and summarizes insufficient of the tem design in this project and also gives some imaginations of working in the future at last.
